Optical character

The 75mm F1.4 is a compact, fully manual portrait prime that sits between a 50mm and an 85mm. It gives a little more working distance and compression than a fifty, but is shorter and lighter than most fast 85s: 408g and 77mm long in a metal barrel.

The optics are simple, with six elements in six groups, three of them high-refractive-index glass. It has a 13-blade diaphragm, the aperture ring clicks in whole stops, and the 58mm filter thread and 0.88m close focus suit head-and-shoulders portraits. There are no electronic contacts.

Reviewer consensus

We summarise professional reviews only after reading at least two independent ones. Not enough have been published or verified for this lens yet.

Owner sentiment

Owners mostly praise the build and the look: an all-metal barrel with well-weighted rings, very soft background blur and pleasant compression, at a price well below any brand-name portrait lens. One uses it mainly for street photography because it is about half the size of a typical 85mm, and another finds it decently sharp in the centre wide open once focus is nailed, with impressive results when stopped down.

The common reservations are colour fringing wide open, softer results at f/1.4 than expensive lenses, and focusing that takes patience and peaking or magnification. Owners also point out that the aperture clicks only in whole stops, there are no contacts or EXIF, no hood is included, and backlit scenes can show ghosting or odd flare effects.
