Optical character

Canon's hybrid stills-and-video standard zoom: a constant f/2.8 from 24 to 105mm in a barrel that does not change length when zooming. The 23-element design uses four UD and three aspherical elements, and Canon says it matches the RF 24-70mm F2.8 L for image quality while adding reach.

Two Nano USM motors drive focus, IS is rated at 5.5 stops (up to 8 with in-body IS), and the lens accepts Canon's optional PZ-E2 power-zoom adapters. It was the first RF lens with a clickless, cine-style iris ring, which works only when recording video. At 1330g and 199mm, with a removable tripod foot, it is far larger than the f/4 version.

Reviewer consensus

Testers report superb centre sharpness at every focal length and aperture. Corners are good at the shorter focal lengths, especially by f/4 to f/5.6, but softer at 105mm wide open and only average in lab tests at the long end. Uncorrected files show strong barrel distortion at 24mm turning to pincushion at the tele end, and visible colour fringing, so the lens relies on in-camera correction.

Autofocus is fast, silent and accurate with little hunting, image stabilisation is very effective, and focus breathing is well controlled for video. The iris ring is smooth but works only in movie mode. Size and weight are the main objection for stills shooters, along with a price aimed at professionals and an expensive power-zoom adapter.
