Optical character

One of the first RF lenses and the original EOS R kit zoom. It covers 24-105mm at a constant f/4 in 700g, about 11mm shorter than the EF 24-105mm f/4L IS II, and it was the first L lens with a Nano USM motor.

The 18-element design uses one UD and three double-sided aspherical elements, with ASC against flare. IS is rated at 5 stops, focus is fast and near silent for video, and the barrel is dust- and drip-resistant with fluorine coatings on the front and rear elements. A clicked, customisable control ring sits at the front and a lock holds the zoom at 24mm.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find it sharp across most of the range, centre and edges, from 24mm to about 85mm wide open; at 105mm it is weaker at f/4 and improves at f/5.6. Corner shading is obvious wide open at both ends and needs about f/8 to clear. Barrel distortion at 24mm is mild and turns to slight pincushion from 50mm, and colour fringing is low, appearing mainly at the frame edges at either end of the zoom.

Autofocus is very fast, quiet and reliable, the 5-stop IS is effective, and build and weather sealing suit professional use. The control ring is welcomed, although it cannot be de-clicked for video. It is judged optically a step above the EF version, with the price as a standalone purchase the main reservation.
