Optical character

Canon's budget full-frame standard zoom, sold alone and as a kit lens with the EOS RP. It covers 24-105mm in 395g and 88.8mm, at the cost of a slow f/4-7.1 aperture that reaches f/5.6 by 50mm and f/7.1 from about 80mm.

The 13-element design has a single aspherical element and relies on in-camera correction at the wide end. A lead-screw STM motor drives focus, IS is rated at 5 stops, and a Center Focus Macro mode in MF lets it focus to 0.13m at 24mm for 0.5x magnification (0.4x at 105mm with AF). One ring switches between focus and control functions, and there is no weather sealing.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find the centre sharp across the zoom range, best around 50mm, with soft corners at 24mm wide open and weaker results at 105mm and f/7.1. Vignetting is obvious wide open at both ends, barrel distortion and some fringing at 24mm need correction, and flare is a weakness when shooting toward the sun. Center Focus Macro gives 0.5x, but only the middle of the frame is sharp.

Autofocus is quick and quiet, with no real penalty from the slow aperture, and the stabiliser makes slow shutter speeds usable. The f/7.1 long end limits low-light work and background blur. The build is plastic but solid, there is no hood in the box, and switching between AF and MF is clumsy. Testers rate it very good value and a small, light partner for compact bodies.
