Optical character

This full-frame macro goes beyond life size: at its 0.17m minimum focus it reaches 2:1 magnification, twice what most autofocus macro lenses offer. It is a fully manual, all-metal lens with 14 elements in 12 groups (two ED and two high-refractive-index), focusing groups that travel forward inside the barrel, a 67mm filter thread and a 9-blade aperture.

The 180-degree focus throw is long and smooth, which makes fine focusing at high magnification possible without a focus rail. The clicked aperture ring runs in half stops from f/2.8 to f/5.6, then full stops to f/22. At launch it cost about half the price of Nikon's Z MC 50mm f/2.8, a 1:1 autofocus macro.

Reviewer consensus

We summarise professional reviews only after reading at least two independent ones. Not enough have been published or verified for this lens yet.

Owner sentiment

Owners describe it as a capable macro lens on a budget, with fine detail in close-ups even handheld on a first outing. The all-metal barrel and metal cap feel substantial, the aperture ring has a firm click and the focus ring turns smoothly with useful resistance.

Some use it for specialised work such as slide scanning and report excellent results. One owner notes it is not a lightweight lens, and the feedback so far comes from a small number of buyers of the Sony E version, which shares the same optics.
