Optical character

The Loxia 2.8/21 is a compact all-metal Distagon based on ZEISS's well-regarded 21mm optical layout, rebuilt for the short E-mount flange. It is only 72mm long and takes 52mm filters, small enough for a wide that resolves high-megapixel sensors to the edges stopped down.

Focus is fully manual with a 90-degree throw and engraved distance and depth-of-field scales. Electronic contacts send EXIF data and trigger focus magnification. The aperture can be de-clicked for video, and the 10-blade iris produces distinctive 20-point sunstars.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it sharp in the centre from f/2.8, with very good edges from f/5.6-8, low lateral colour and strong flare resistance. Its sunstars and micro-contrast are common highlights. Distortion is a moderate wave (moustache) type that needs a profile for architecture.

The drawbacks noted are visible vignetting wide open, some colour shift in the corners on certain older Sony sensors, and the price for a manual-focus f/2.8 lens. Testers called the handling, build and focus feel excellent.

Owner sentiment

Owners describe it as a favourite landscape and travel wide because it is small, precise to focus and robustly built, and it renders with rich colour and contrast. Videographers value the smooth focus, de-click option and accessory gear rings.

Complaints include the lack of autofocus, wide-open corner softness, a mount gasket that is the only weather protection, and rising used prices after production ended. Some find the 90-degree focus throw short for precise video pulls.
