Optical character

The Color-Skopar 21mm trades speed for size: at under 40mm long and 230g it is one of the smallest full-frame 21mm lenses for Sony E. The design was optimised for Sony sensors and uses one aspherical and one anomalous partial-dispersion element.

At f/3.5 the depth of field is deep enough for scale-focus snapshots, and the 0.2m close focus allows strong foreground perspective. It has an all-metal helicoid, a screw-in hood and electronic contacts for EXIF, focus magnification and in-body stabilisation. Cosina ended production in June 2023.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it sharp across most of the frame from f/3.5 and sharp to the edges when stopped down, with good control of chromatic aberration. Against the Zeiss Loxia 21mm it comes close in resolution at about half the price, size and weight, with edges only a little softer.

The consistent drawback is vignetting, which is fairly strong wide open and never fully disappears. Distortion is low and flare is generally well handled for such a small lens.

Owner sentiment

Owners treat it as a pocketable walk-around wide for travel and street, and like how well it balances on small A7 and A7C bodies. The tactile focus ring and solid metal feel get frequent praise.

Complaints centre on corner shading, the slow aperture for indoor or night use, and the lack of a de-click option for video. Since production ended, buyers mostly look for used copies.
