Optical character

The 35mm F1.2 SE adapted the optics of Cosina's Nokton 35mm F1.2 Aspherical III rangefinder lens to Sony E-mount. Two double-sided aspherical elements control spherical aberration, and the result is a compact f/1.2 wide-standard of 387g with a 58mm filter thread.

SE means Still Edition: the aperture ring has fixed 1/3-stop clicks and no de-click mechanism, which kept size and cost down. It has an all-metal barrel, a 12-blade aperture and electronic contacts for EXIF, focus magnification and IBIS distance data. Cosina has since discontinued it.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found the centre usable at f/1.2 but covered in glow and purple fringing; it becomes good by f/2 and very good by f/2.8. The mid-frame needs about f/5.6, and the extreme corners never get fully crisp. Vignetting is strong (over 3 EV uncorrected wide open), with moustache distortion and strong coma that rule it out for astrophotography.

Bokeh is very smooth at close and portrait distances, and the lens has good resistance to ghosting, with attractive sunstars. Reviewers saw it as a fair compromise between speed and size rather than a technical benchmark.

Owner sentiment

Owners like the size-to-speed ratio, the precise metal focus ring and the glowing, vintage-leaning look at f/1.2 that cleans up quickly when stopped down. Many use it as a compact low-light street and travel lens.

Common complaints are the soft corners, the fringing on high-contrast edges wide open and the clicked aperture, which makes it less suited to video. Since its discontinuation, buyers mostly find it used.
