Optical character
The 35mm is the most general-purpose of Tamron's compact f/2.8 OSD primes. At 210g it is a small everyday lens, and like its 20mm and 24mm siblings it focuses close enough for 1:2 magnification at 0.15m, so a single lens covers street, travel, food and small-product shots.
It shares the same 73 x 64mm barrel, 67mm filter thread, moisture-resistant construction and fluorine coating as the other two. A cap-type hood is supplied; if you use it, the filter screws onto the hood rather than the lens.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate it the sharpest of the three OSD primes, with a crisp centre at f/2.8 and good corners by f/5.6. Chromatic aberration is well controlled and distortion is low for a compact 35mm.
The usual caveats apply: f/2.8 gives limited subject separation at normal distances, the 7-blade aperture is visible in out-of-focus highlights, and the OSD motor is adequate for general use but behind modern linear-motor lenses for tracking and video.
Owner sentiment
Owners like it as a cheap, light, weather-sealed 35 that can also do close-ups, and many use it as a travel lens on small A7C-type bodies. The close focus is often described as the reason they chose it over faster 35mm options.
The complaints are about AF noise and speed, the narrow focus ring, and the fact that a fast f/1.8 35mm is not much more expensive. The cap-type hood is liked by some and found awkward by others.
