Optical character

One of Tamron's three matching f/2.8 primes for Sony FE (20, 24 and 35mm), the 24mm is built around a single idea: half-life-size magnification at a wide angle. It focuses to 0.12m, which puts the subject a couple of centimetres from the front element and lets you shoot small objects large in the frame while keeping the scene around them.

At 215g and 64mm long it is small and cheap, with a 67mm filter thread shared with most of Tamron's E-mount zooms, moisture-resistant seals and a fluorine-coated front element. The trade-off is a slower f/2.8 aperture, a 7-blade diaphragm and an older DC-motor AF system.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found it sharp in the centre from f/2.8 with corners that need f/5.6 to f/8 to catch up, which is typical for a budget wide prime. Distortion and vignetting are noticeable uncorrected but handled well by in-camera profiles, and lateral colour is low.

The close-focus ability is the feature reviewers keep coming back to, though image quality softens at the 1:2 limit. The OSD focus motor is quiet and accurate but not fast, and focus hunting in low light is the most common practical complaint.

Owner sentiment

Owners buy it as a light walkaround or travel wide and are pleased with the size, the weather sealing at this price, and the close-up shots it allows. Several pair it with the 20mm and 35mm siblings because of the identical size and filter thread.

Complaints centre on AF speed for moving subjects, audible focusing in quiet video work, and the 7-blade aperture producing angular highlights when stopped down. Some find the small barrel and narrow focus ring less pleasant to use manually.
