Optical character

Sony's second f/4 70-200 is shorter (149mm) and lighter (794g) than the original, and it is the first zoom to give 0.5x magnification across the whole range. That makes it a telephoto for travel and wildlife that doubles as a half-macro lens for insects, flowers and product details, focusing from 0.26m at 70mm.

Unlike its predecessor it works with both Sony teleconverters. The 2x converter turns it into a 140-400mm f/8 that reaches 1:1. XD linear motors, Optical SteadyShot and a fluorine-coated front element make it a practical everyday G lens.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers rate it clearly sharper than the first version, especially at 200mm and in the corners, and close-up performance holds up well at 0.5x. AF is fast and quiet, and stabilisation is effective. Most call it the best-value Sony 70-200 for hikers and hybrid shooters.

The drawbacks noted are that the barrel extends when zooming rather than zooming internally, there is no aperture ring, and bokeh is pleasant but busier than the G Master f/2.8 lenses. Some testers also point out that it costs more than the original did at launch.

Owner sentiment

Owners like the size and the close focus, and many say it replaced a separate macro lens on trips. Teleconverter support is popular with wildlife shooters on a budget.

The complaints are about the extending barrel for video and gimbal use, the lack of an aperture ring, and the price compared with third-party options. A few miss the original's internal zoom.
