Optical character

Sigma's 500mm F5.6 is a handholdable super-telephoto prime at 1365g and 236.6mm, about the size of a 70-200mm f/2.8 with its hood fitted. Large low-dispersion elements at the front (three FLD and two SLD) keep the optical path short while controlling axial colour. It suits bird, wildlife and field-sport photographers who want prime-lens sharpness without a monopod.

OS2 stabilisation is rated at 5 stops and includes a panning mode, and an HLA linear motor handles focus. The Sports-line body is dust- and splash-resistant and carries an aperture ring with click and lock switches, three AFL buttons, a focus limiter and a detachable Arca-compatible magnesium foot.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it very sharp at f/5.6 across the frame, with clean contrast and little CA. It is clearly crisper than 150-600mm and 200-600mm zooms at 500mm. Autofocus is fast and tracks birds in flight well on recent Sony bodies, and the stabilisation works well for handheld shooting.

The drawbacks are the fixed focal length against zooms that cost much less, an f/5.6 aperture that is no faster than those zooms at the long end, and a 3.2m minimum focus distance. Sigma's teleconverters are supported only on L-Mount, which removes the 700mm and 1000mm options for Sony users.

Owner sentiment

Owners describe it as the lens that made handheld 500mm shooting practical, especially for hiking and travel wildlife trips. Sharpness and the compact size get the most praise, along with the hood and tripod foot design.

Common complaints are the lack of teleconverter support on E-mount, the 3.2m close focus that frustrates small-bird shooters, and the price compared with Sony's 200-600mm G. Some users still choose a zoom for flexibility.
