Optical character
The 24mm F3.5 is the smallest lens in Sigma's I series: 230g, 50.8mm long, and fully metal-bodied. It trades aperture for size, and its standout feature is close focus to 10.8cm, giving half life-size (1:2) magnification at a wide-angle field of view.
The close focus makes it useful for wide close-ups, product shots and food as well as landscapes and travel. It has the I series' knurled metal focus and aperture rings, a stepping motor for quiet AF, and a metal hood and magnetic cap in the box. Sigma renamed it from "DG DN" to "DG" in the renewed I series; the optics are unchanged.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers find the centre sharp from f/3.5 and the corners good by f/5.6 to f/8, which suits a lens that will mostly be used stopped down. The near-1:2 close focus is consistently called its best trick. Uncorrected files show clear barrel distortion and vignetting, so it depends on the in-camera profiles.
The main reservation is the slow f/3.5 aperture, which limits low-light use and background blur at normal distances. The 7-blade aperture and modest speed give plain bokeh, but the build is praised as far above what its price would suggest.
Owner sentiment
Owners use it as a body-cap-sized wide for travel and street shooting on A7C and A7-series bodies, and many say it rarely leaves the camera. The metal rings, hood and magnetic cap get plenty of praise, as does the close-focus ability.
Complaints include visible distortion when profiles are off, slow light gathering indoors, and focus breathing that makes it less ideal for video. Some find the magnetic cap easy to lose.
