Optical character

Part of Sigma's all-metal I series, the 17mm F4 is one of the smallest full-frame ultra-wides with autofocus: 50.8mm long, 220g, and it takes 55mm filters. Two SLD and three aspherical elements keep it sharp from f/4, and it focuses to 12cm for a 1:3.6 ratio, so foreground objects can be pushed right up to the lens.

It has a clicked aperture ring with an A position, an AF/MF switch and a magnetic metal cap. The f/4 maximum aperture limits it for night skies and shallow focus, but for travel, architecture, interiors and handheld vlogging it adds very little to a small camera body. Sigma renamed it from "DG DN" to "DG" in the 2026 I-series refresh without changing the optics.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found it sharp in the centre and corners from f/4, with f/4–f/8 the best range and diffraction setting in from f/11. Barrel distortion and corner vignetting are present before correction but are routine for the class. The stepping-motor AF is quick, quiet and good with face tracking in video.

The usual reservations are the slow aperture, busy out-of-focus rendering, noticeable longitudinal colour fringing in some scenes, and weather sealing that stops at the mount gasket.

Owner sentiment

Owners use it as a carry-everywhere wide on compact bodies and for walk-around vlogging, and the metal build and click-stopped aperture ring come up often as reasons to choose it over plastic alternatives. The 12cm close focus gets a lot of praise.

Common complaints are f/4 in low light, the fact that the aperture ring cannot be declicked for video, and some focus breathing.
