Optical character
The widest lens in Sigma's all-metal I series, the 17mm F4 is a 225g, 48.8mm-long ultra-wide prime for L-Mount that takes 55mm filters, the same size as several other I-series lenses. Two SLD and three aspherical elements keep it compact, and it focuses down to 12cm for a 1:3.6 ratio, so foreground objects can be pushed close to the lens.
The aluminium barrel carries a clicked aperture ring with an A position and an AF/MF switch, and a magnetic metal cap comes in the box alongside a metal hood. On L-Mount it is offered in black and in silver. Sigma renamed it from "DG DN" to "DG" without changing the optics. The f/4 aperture limits it for shallow depth of field; it is aimed at travel, street, architecture and vlogging on small bodies.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found it sharp from f/4, very good in the centre and good to the corners wide open, with the best overall results around f/5.6 and diffraction softening from f/11. Barrel distortion is partly left to the lens profile, and corner shading is visible at f/4 but small and easily corrected. Colour fringing and coma are not a concern, while the out-of-focus rendering from the seven-blade diaphragm can look busy.
The all-metal build, clicked aperture ring and small size get consistent praise, as does the 12cm close focus. Autofocus is quiet and accurate for static subjects and video, though one test on Lumix bodies found it slow to start when subjects moved into the frame. The criticisms are the f/4 maximum aperture, sealing only at the mount and an aperture ring that cannot be declicked.
