Optical character

Sigma's 14mm F1.8 was the first 14mm lens with an f/1.8 aperture, and it remains one of the fastest rectilinear ultra-wides on full frame. Its 80mm front element is a precision-moulded aspherical, and three FLD and four SLD elements control lateral colour, so the frame stays clean to the edges with little distortion for the focal length.

The Sony E version is the DSLR optical design with the extra flange depth built into the barrel, which makes it 152mm long and 1,170g. The bulbous front glass and fixed hood rule out screw-in filters, though a rear gel holder is provided. It is built for night skies, interiors and dramatic close-foreground landscapes rather than travel.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found the centre very sharp at f/1.8 and the corners good by f/2.8, with coma control strong enough to make it a popular astrophotography lens. Distortion is moderate for a 14mm, and lateral chromatic aberration is low.

Vignetting is heavy wide open, at roughly three stops in the corners, and the exposed front element makes it prone to ghosting with the sun in frame. On Sony bodies the HSM focusing works with eye detection but is slower and noisier than modern linear-motor lenses, which matters little at this focal length.

Owner sentiment

Owners mostly bought it for Milky Way and aurora work, and they say the f/1.8 aperture lets them use lower ISO or shorter exposures than f/2.8 zooms allow. Corner stars are described as tight, and the build feels solid.

Complaints are about weight and length on small E-mount bodies, no front filters, and the lens cap that is easy to knock off. Several owners moved to Sigma's lighter 14mm F1.4 DG DN or to f/2.8 zooms once the mirrorless options appeared.
