Optical character
Sigma's mirrorless 14-24mm is a constant-f/2.8 ultra-wide zoom built around landscape and night-sky work. One FLD, five SLD and three aspherical elements, including a large aspherical front element, keep coma and colour fringing well controlled into the corners. It costs less than half of Sony's 12-24mm f/2.8 GM.
The bulbous front element means there is no front filter thread. Sigma supplies a rear holder for sheet filters instead. The 11-blade aperture, NPC and Super Multi-Layer coatings, an AFL button and a dust- and splash-resistant body make it a practical field lens at 795g.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers rate it among the sharpest ultra-wide zooms for Sony E. Centre resolution is excellent at f/2.8 at both ends, and the corners sharpen quickly when stopped down. Coma and astigmatism are low enough that it is often recommended for astrophotography over faster primes.
The usual criticisms are heavy vignetting at 14mm wide open, distortion that relies on in-camera correction, and some flare and ghosting from the exposed front element in harsh backlight. Testers also note that it is larger than f/4 alternatives, and that the lack of front filters is a real limit for landscape shooters who use ND or graduated filters.
Owner sentiment
Owners mostly bought it for Milky Way and landscape work and say it delivers. They mention clean stars into the corners at f/2.8 and good value against the GM. The stepping-motor AF is quick and quiet, which matters little for this focal range but helps for video.
Recurring complaints are the size and weight on smaller bodies, the bulbous front element that is easy to smudge, and the effort needed to use filters (rear gels or third-party holders). Some users mention dew forming on the front element during long night sessions.
