Optical character

Sony gave up a little range to make an f/2.8 wide zoom that weighs 409g and takes 67mm filters. It shares that size and filter thread with the FE 24-50mm F2.8 G, and the two together cover 16-50mm at f/2.8 in a small kit.

Four aspherical elements, one of them ED, plus three ED elements keep it sharp across the frame. Two linear motors handle AF, and the lens has an aperture ring with a click switch, a focus-hold button, weather sealing and a fluorine-coated front element. It also supports in-body focus-breathing compensation for video.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found it sharp from f/2.8 through the range, with corners at 16mm close to Sony's larger GM zooms once stopped down slightly. AF is fast and silent, and focus breathing is low. Flare resistance is good for the price class.

The trade-offs are the short 16-25mm range, noticeable vignetting wide open and reliance on in-camera distortion correction at 16mm. Several reviewers point to Sigma's and Tamron's wider-range f/2.8 zooms as better value if size is not the priority.

Owner sentiment

Owners buy it for travel, gimbal video and hiking, and most praise the size, the 67mm filters and the aperture ring. Pairing it with the 24-50 G is a common setup.

The complaints are the narrow zoom range, the price compared with third-party wide zooms and the plastic-feeling barrel. Some owners expected it to reach 28mm or 35mm.
