Optical character

The MK2 keeps the optics of Samyang's long-selling 14mm F2.8 and gives them a new barrel built for night-sky work. A focus lock holds infinity during long exposures and time-lapses, and a silver ring switches the aperture between clicked and de-clicked operation for video.

The nine-blade diaphragm, up from six, produces 18-point sunstars and rounder out-of-focus highlights. A micro-patterned rubber focus grip, a shorter focus throw and a sealing gasket at the mount complete the update. Like the original, it has a fixed petal hood, a bulging front element and no electronic contacts on Sony E.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers find image quality essentially unchanged from the original: a sharp centre from f/2.8, good corners when stopped down, and well-controlled coma for astrophotography. The handling changes, especially the focus lock and de-click ring, are seen as genuine improvements rather than cosmetic ones.

The same optical weaknesses carry over. Moustache distortion is strong and complex, vignetting is heavy wide open and filters cannot be fitted without a third-party holder. The new barrel also adds well over 100g compared with the original Sony E version.

Owner sentiment

Astrophotographers like being able to lock focus at infinity and stop worrying about bumping the ring in the dark, and video shooters appreciate the silent de-clicked aperture. Many owners upgraded from the original specifically for those two features.

Complaints focus on weight (708g on Sony E), the lack of EXIF and focus-distance data, occasional decentred copies, and the moustache distortion that still needs a profile in post. Some also note that the sealing is limited to the mount gasket.
