Optical character
Samyang's third autofocus lens is a body-cap-sized 35mm pancake: 86g and 33mm long, with seven elements in six groups including two aspherical and one high-refractive element. It turns a full-frame Sony body into a compact everyday camera for a fraction of the cost of Sony's ZEISS 35mm f/2.8.
The f/2.8 aperture and 0.35m close focus favour street, travel and documentary snapshots more than shallow-depth portraits, though the rounded 7-blade aperture keeps out-of-focus areas reasonably smooth. The lens has no switches, only a thin by-wire focus ring, and it ships with a small screw-on hood.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers find good centre sharpness from f/2.8, with the edges and corners lagging until about f/5.6 to f/8, plus pronounced vignetting and some barrel distortion that profiles correct. Contrast and colour are pleasant, and lateral CA is modest.
Autofocus is the main weakness. It is accurate in good light but slower and more audible than Sony's lenses, and it can hunt in dim conditions or during continuous video. Most reviews still see it as a sensible budget choice when size and price matter more than the last bit of performance.
Owner sentiment
Owners use it as the lens that makes an a7 truly pocketable, and many say they bought it as a cheap walkaround or travel lens. The weight and price get the most praise.
Complaints cover the slow AF in low light, a focus ring that is hard to grip, soft corners for landscapes, and early firmware bugs on some bodies that later updates addressed.
