Optical character
The 35/1.4 P launched LK Samyang's Prima line and is the company's attempt at a light, everyday f/1.4. At 470g it is about 190g lighter than the FE II, and Samyang called it the lightest AF 35mm F1.4 when it was announced. A new 12-element design with three aspherical, one high-refractive and one ED element replaces the older layout.
It is tuned for hybrid shooters, with focus breathing kept very low for video. It has five-point weather sealing, a micro-patterned rubber focus ring, and a USB-C port in the mount for firmware updates and focus-ring settings. It drops the AF/MF switch, focus-hold button and custom switch of the FE II.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp in the centre from f/1.4 and good across the frame by f/2–2.8, with smooth bokeh and lower colour fringing than Samyang's older 35s. The weight saving is real and makes it much easier to balance on compact bodies, and focus breathing is minimal.
Autofocus is quick and quiet for stills and video, but it does not match the speed of first-party XD-motor lenses for fast action. Critics also point to the plastic build and the lack of any switches or buttons, which feels sparse next to the FE II.
Owner sentiment
Owners like the size and weight and the way it balances on an a7C II or ZV-E1. Many call it the best value fast 35 for Sony right now, and USB-C updates are welcomed.
The complaints are about controls: no AF/MF switch, no focus-hold button, and a mostly plastic feel. A few owners note strong vignetting wide open and flare with bright light sources at the edge of the frame.
