Reviewers report very good sharpness for both close-up and distance work, with strong resolution across the frame at telephoto distances and clean, fringe-free edges in close-ups. The smooth, well-damped focus ring makes manual focusing at high magnification comfortable, and the build feels better than the price suggests.

Autofocus is the weak point. Early reviews treated it as a manual-focus macro lens with distance AF added, because AF stopped at 1.5m. Even after firmware, focus speed is behind dedicated AF macros from Sony and Sigma. The f/4.5 aperture also limits low-light work and background blur at portrait distances. One tester found close-range sharpness a step behind the best 100mm macros.

Macro shooters like the working distance and the size. Many carry it in place of a 100mm macro for insects and reptiles, and use it as a light 180mm for portraits and details. The $499 price is a big draw.

Owners say to update the firmware first, since AF behaviour changed a lot after launch. Others mention f/4.5 in dim conditions, no aperture ring on the AF versions, and that magnification above 1:1 needs a steady hand or a rail despite the long working distance.
