Optical character

Laowa's first tele-macro reaches 1.5:1 magnification at a working distance of about 148mm, roughly twice the room a 100mm macro gives you. That extra distance helps with skittish insects and leaves space for lighting. At around 520g and 67.6mm wide, it is much smaller than the old 180mm DSLR macros.

The APO design uses two ED elements and one ultra-high-refraction element to keep longitudinal and lateral colour fringing low. The Nikon Z version is one of the AF variants (the RF and L versions are manual only), with a function button and a USB-C port for firmware. Autofocus covers 1.5m to infinity; the macro range is focused by hand, where the smooth, long-throw ring does the work.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers report very good sharpness for both close-up and distance work, with strong resolution across the frame at telephoto distances and clean, fringe-free edges in close-ups. The smooth, well-damped focus ring makes manual focusing at high magnification comfortable, and the build feels better than the price suggests.

Autofocus is the weak point. Early reviews treated it as a manual-focus macro lens with distance AF added, because AF stopped at 1.5m. Even after firmware, focus speed is behind dedicated AF macros from Nikon and Sigma. The f/4.5 aperture also limits low-light work and background blur at portrait distances. One tester found close-range sharpness a step behind the best 100mm macros.

Owner sentiment

Macro shooters like the working distance and the size. Many carry it in place of a 100mm macro for insects and reptiles, and use it as a light 180mm for portraits and details. The $499 price is a big draw.

Owners say to update the firmware first, since Laowa has been refining AF behaviour since launch. Others mention f/4.5 in dim conditions, no aperture ring on the AF versions, and that magnification above 1:1 needs a steady hand or a rail despite the long working distance.
