Optical character

Nikon's 120-300mm is a constant f/2.8 telephoto zoom with a built-in 1.4x teleconverter. A switch on the barrel moves the converter into the light path and turns the lens into a 168-420mm f/4, so sports and wildlife shooters can change reach without fitting an external converter. At 2,735g Nikon says it is about 515g lighter than the F-mount AF-S 120-300mm f/2.8E.

The design uses one fluorite, one Super ED, one ED, one SR and one aspherical element, with Meso Amorphous Coat and ARNEO Coat against ghosting and flare. Focus is driven by Nikon's Silky Swift VCM motor, with internal focusing and internal zoom so the length stays constant. Nikon rates VR at 6.5 stops on supported bodies with Synchro VR. The magnesium-alloy barrel is dust- and drip-resistant and includes a 112mm front filter thread, a 46mm rear slip-in filter holder and an Arca-Swiss compatible tripod foot.
