Optical character

Laowa's full-frame "cookie" is a 110° ultra-wide that is only 35mm long and 138g on Sony E, small enough to sit in a jacket pocket next to a standard zoom. It still takes ordinary 39mm screw-in filters and focuses down to 12cm.

Focus is manual on a short 90° throw, but the Sony E version has electronic contacts: the camera sets the aperture, records EXIF and pops up focus magnification when you turn the ring. The five-blade diaphragm draws crisp 10-point sunstars from f/5.6, and a tiny bayonet hood is included.

Reviewer consensus

Testers see it as a fair trade of image quality for size. The centre is good from f/5, but there is a visible mid-frame dip at wide apertures, so high-resolution bodies need f/8–f/11 for even results across the frame. Close-range performance is better than expected thanks to a floating-element design.

The compromises are heavy vignetting (roughly 2.6–3.2 EV wide open), noticeable wavy distortion (it is not a Zero-D design), visible lateral CA that profiles remove easily, and only average flare resistance, with ring flares possible when the sun sits near the centre. Colour cast in the corners is not an issue on Sony sensors.

Owner sentiment

Owners buy it as a carry-everywhere ultra-wide for travel and hiking kits, and many say it gets used far more than larger, sharper 15mm lenses because it always fits in the bag. The 39mm filter thread and the camera-controlled aperture on E-mount are popular.

Owners who have compared it with Laowa's 15mm f/2 say the bigger lens is clearly crisper at infinity. Others mention a light focus ring, a stiff mount gasket, and that the fixed in-camera distance reading is useless for focus-distance EXIF.
