Optical character

Laowa's full-frame "cookie" is a 110° ultra-wide that is only about 40mm long and well under 200g, small enough to sit next to a standard zoom in any bag. It still takes ordinary 39mm screw-in filters and focuses down to 12cm (0.2x).

The Canon RF version is fully manual: focus by hand, and set the aperture on a clicked ring on the lens, because only the Sony E and Nikon Z versions offer camera-controlled aperture and EXIF. The 13-element design uses 2 aspherical, 4 ED and 3 high-refraction elements, and the five-blade diaphragm draws 10-point sunstars from f/5.6. A small lens hood is included.

Reviewer consensus

We summarise professional reviews only after reading at least two independent ones. Not enough have been published or verified for this lens yet.

Owner sentiment

Owners buy it for the size above all: one says portability is the whole reason they bought it, and another finds it so light that they keep reaching for it despite the slow f/5 aperture and only moderate resolution. Manual focus is easy with focus peaking and a clear distance scale, and the corner falloff is seen as part of a pleasing character.

The 39mm filter thread works, but with the hood fitted only one filter can be stacked before the corners vignette, and the tiny lens cap is fiddly to remove with the hood in place. These reports come from Sony E and Nikon Z owners; the RF version shares the optics but has a manual aperture ring.
