Optical character
The full-frame AF 35mm F1.8 is the best-performing lens in 7Artisans' f/1.8 autofocus series. Its 11-element, 8-group design includes two aspherical, two high-refractive and one ED element. It is very sharp in the centre from f/1.8 and excellent by f/2.8, with good edges wide open and no focus breathing.
It shares the 72mm-wide all-metal body of its 24mm and 85mm siblings: 94mm long, 426g, with a stepless aperture ring, AF/MF switch, function button, USB-C port and a rubber gasket at the mount. The 11-blade diaphragm gives rounded highlights, and the rendering suits environmental portraits and street work.
Reviewer consensus
Testing showed a lens that is sharp across most of the frame wide open and near excellent at f/8. Coma is very well controlled for night-sky work, both kinds of CA are small, and bokeh is better than average, if sometimes marked by onion rings and slight double edging. Distortion is mild and easy to correct.
The main weakness is flare, which is poor and slightly worse stopped down. Vignetting is about 2.2 EV at f/1.8. The STM autofocus is precise but hesitates with small back-and-forth corrections when moving between near and far subjects.
Owner sentiment
Owners see it as one of the best-value full-frame 35mm AF lenses, praising the sharpness and metal build at $299. Video shooters like the lack of breathing and the clickless ring.
Common complaints are flare in backlight, AF that can be indecisive with tracking, and a size closer to f/1.4 lenses than to compact 35s.
