Optical character

Viltrox's Pro 50 is built to compete with premium first-party standards at a mid-range price. It uses 15 elements in 11 groups, including an ultra-precision aspherical (UA) element, three ED and eight high-refractive elements, and is very sharp from f/1.4. Eleven aperture blades keep highlights round when stopped down.

It is a large, all-metal lens at 830g in Z mount, with weather sealing, a de-clickable aperture ring, an AF/MF switch and a custom Fn button, and it shares its body and control layout with the 85mm F1.4 Pro. Focus is driven by two HyperVCM voice-coil motors. On Nikon Z it sits between the compact NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.4 and the far larger, dearer Z 50mm f/1.2 S.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found the centre excellent wide open and outstanding by f/4, with corners that hold up well even at f/1.4. Lateral CA is almost negligible and distortion is mild, though there is no in-camera correction profile. Autofocus was described as quick and silent, and build quality was rated among the best of any third-party mirrorless lens.

The drawbacks are weight and size (830g, 113mm on Z), noticeable bokeh fringing at f/1.4 and f/2, some focus shift when stopping down, and heavy vignetting wide open. Foreground blur can look nervous, while background blur is smooth.

Owner sentiment

Owners describe it as a lens that feels far more expensive than it is, praising the metal barrel, the clicky controls and fast, reliable Eye AF. Nikon shooters often weigh it against the lighter Z 50mm f/1.4 and the Z 50mm f/1.8 S, and pick it for its sharper wide-open corners and sturdier build.

The main complaint is weight on smaller Z bodies. Some early owners reported AF quirks that later firmware fixed, and Viltrox recommends updating to the latest firmware.
