Optical character
Viltrox calls this the first autofocus APO standard prime at f/1.8. Two ED, two high-refractive and one ultra-precision aspherical element bring red, green and blue to the same focal plane, so longitudinal colour fringing is essentially absent even wide open. It sits between the 35mm and 85mm in the EVO line and is aimed at portraits and everyday shooting.
At 390g and 78mm long in Z mount it stays compact for a corrected fast standard. Sharpness is high from f/1.8, with the corners close behind the centre. The barrel carries an aperture ring with an A position and a click/de-click switch, an AF/MF switch, a function button and a USB-C port for firmware. The mount is gasketed and the front element has a water- and smudge-resistant coating.
Reviewer consensus
Testing on Nikon Z backs up the APO claim: no visible longitudinal CA, no focus shift, and very little lateral CA. Resolution is high across the frame at f/1.8 on a 45MP sensor, the corners are excellent by f/4, and close-up and portrait-distance results are just as strong. Against the NIKKOR Z 50mm f/1.8 S it is sharper in the corners, at portrait distances and in sunstars, while the Nikon keeps the edge for distortion, lateral colour, bokeh smoothness, focus breathing and AF speed. Vignetting is about 2.3 EV wide open and drops below 1 EV from f/4.
The weak points are typical of the class. Bokeh is even and fringe-free but shows some onion-ring texture and cat's-eye shapes toward the edges. Barrel distortion needs a small correction. Flare resistance is good but behind the best first-party designs. The STM motor is accurate and quiet but only average in speed, and focus breathing is strong enough to matter for video.
Owner sentiment
Early owners praise how sharp it is wide open, how little it weighs, and the APO-corrected colour. Several Nikon users say it has replaced a Z 50mm f/1.8 S in their bag. The aperture ring and declick switch are popular at this price.
The complaints repeat what the reviews found. AF speed is fine but not class-leading, the motor can be audible when it hunts, and the A position on the aperture ring has no lock and is easy to knock out of place.
