Optical character

The Noct is Nikon's statement lens for the Z mount: an f/0.95 standard prime that uses the mount's 55mm throat to deliver sharp, coma-free rendering at full aperture, not the soft glow usually associated with sub-f/1 lenses. Seventeen elements, including four ED and three aspherical elements and a large ground aspherical made from high-index glass, keep point lights crisp to the corners.

It is manual focus only and weighs 2kg. The barrel carries an OLED information panel showing aperture, focus distance and depth of field, a customisable L-Fn button and a control ring, and the long, damped focus throw is tuned for precise focusing at f/0.95. It is sealed against dust and drips and ships with a hard trunk case.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers agree the optics are exceptional for the aperture. It resolves real detail at f/0.95, sagittal coma is nearly absent, which makes it a remarkable night and astro lens, and the transition from focus to blur is smooth with round highlights over much of the frame. Longitudinal colour fringing is low for such a fast design.

The objections are about everything else: 2kg and roughly 15cm long, manual focus that is hard to nail on moving subjects at f/0.95, and a price several times that of the excellent 50mm f/1.2 S, which most testers consider the more practical choice.

Owner sentiment

Owners describe the images as having a look nothing else in the system matches, especially for low-light portraits, night street and wedding detail work. The focus ring and build quality get consistent praise, and the OLED panel is liked more than expected.

Most also admit it is a tripod-or-patience lens. Weight, front-heaviness on smaller Z bodies, the 0.5m close focus and the cost come up repeatedly, and some sold it for the 50mm f/1.2 S once the novelty wore off.
