Optical character

The Z 26mm f/2.8 is Nikon's pancake: 23.5mm long and 125g, the slimmest full-frame AF lens for mirrorless at launch. It turns a Z body into a pocketable street and travel camera, and on DX bodies it acts as a 39mm-equivalent normal lens.

The optics are simple (8 elements, 3 aspherical) and focus by moving the whole optical unit with a stepping motor. The centre is sharp from f/2.8, while the corners and edges need stopping down. Metal construction, sealing against dust and drips, and a slim hood that accepts 52mm filters make it more than a body cap.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers praise its size and the sharp centre wide open, and most still recommend it on portability alone. The corners and edges are weaker at f/2.8, with coma and field curvature, and improve by f/4–5.6.

Vignetting is heavy at f/2.8, and corrected files show more noise in the corners. AF is accurate but noisy and slower than average, with visible focus breathing, so it is less suited to video and fast street work. Focus shift when stopping down is another reported quirk.

Owner sentiment

Owners love how it makes a Z body small enough to carry everywhere, especially on the Z f and Z5. Build quality and the metal finish get positive comments.

The main gripes are the price, about $200 more than the 28mm f/2.8, AF noise that the camera microphone can pick up, and the front-cap-on-hood design. Some owners chose the cheaper 28mm instead once they compared the two.
