Optical character
Sirui's first autofocus lens for L-Mount, announced when the company joined the L-Mount Alliance in March 2025, is a compact portrait 85 at 550g and 94.8mm long per Sirui, the shortest of its four mount versions. Fourteen elements in nine groups include one aspherical, two ED and three high-index elements, behind a 67mm filter thread that is small for an 85/1.4.
Its strength is rendering: the 15-blade aperture keeps highlights round, and backgrounds are smooth and clean. The metal body has an aperture ring with a click on/off switch, an AF/MF switch, an AFL/Fn button, dust and rain resistance, a fluorine-coated front element and a USB-C port on the mount for firmware updates.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found the centre very good to excellent at f/1.4 and the whole frame at its best between f/4 and f/5.6, with bokeh described as the lens's best quality. Lateral colour was low in two tests but unusually strong in a third, optical vignetting (cat's eyes) is modest, though measured light falloff ranged from moderate to significant depending on the test. Performance at the minimum focus distance is soft wide open, and focus shift is pronounced.
The weak points are backlight, where veiling flare and ghosting drop contrast sharply, about 2.5% pincushion distortion without an in-camera profile, and noticeable focus breathing; one lab also found problems with the aperture stopping down properly. Views on the STM autofocus split between quiet and reasonably quick and slower than the best rival 85s. All tests read used Sony E samples. Most reviewers called it a bargain, while one noted that rival budget 85s cost only a little more and avoid some of its flaws.
Owner sentiment
An owner who shoots it alongside Sony's 85mm GM II keeps the Sirui for its solid build, compact size and a rendering they find less clinical than the Sony's, calling it very good for the price.
The same owner found AF adequate in general but unreliable with fine, low-contrast subjects in dim light, with stickier subject tracking from the first-party lens. This report comes from a Sony E body; no L-Mount owner reports were found.
