Optical character

Sirui's first full-frame autofocus lens is a 540g portrait 85 that costs well under half the price of first-party f/1.4 options. Fourteen elements in nine groups, including two ED and three high-index elements, keep it short and light enough for gimbals and long handheld sessions.

Its strength is rendering: the 15-blade aperture keeps highlights round, and out-of-focus backgrounds are smooth and clean. The metal body has a de-clickable aperture ring, AF/MF switch, focus-hold button, dust and rain resistance, and a USB-C port on the mount for firmware updates.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found the centre sharp from f/1.4 and the whole frame excellent between f/4 and f/5.6, with bokeh described as the lens's best quality. Lateral colour is low, and vignetting at f/1.4 is moderate for a fast 85. At close focus distances it is noticeably soft wide open, and focus shift is pronounced at f/1.4.

The weak points are backlight, where veiling flare and ghosting drop contrast sharply, around 2.5% pincushion distortion without an in-camera profile, and axial colour fringing that needs f/2 to clear. The STM autofocus is quiet and accurate for portraits but clearly slower than Sony's GM II or the Viltrox Pro. Given those limits, reviewers consistently called it a bargain.

Owner sentiment

Owners buy it as an affordable, light portrait lens and like the background blur, colour, and the metal build that feels more expensive than the price suggests. The long 360-degree focus throw and de-click switch get credit from video shooters.

The usual complaints are autofocus that hunts or misses with eye-AF in dim light, flare when shooting into the sun, and needing manual distortion correction. Some users update firmware over USB-C to improve AF behaviour on newer Sony bodies.
