Optical character
The 85mm F1.2 DG Art completes Sigma's trio of f/1.2 Art primes and, at 905g, is lighter than the Canon RF and Nikon Z 85mm f/1.2 lenses, which both weigh over a kilogram. A floating design with aspherical elements inside the focus groups keeps the size down, and two HLA linear motors drive focusing.
Two SLD elements and high anomalous-dispersion glass target axial colour fringing, and the 13-blade aperture keeps highlights round when stopped down. The L-Mount version is 119.7mm long and adds a switchable linear/non-linear focus ring and UD-11 USB Dock support. Both mounts get two AFL buttons, a de-clickable aperture ring with lock, dust and splash sealing and a water- and oil-repellent front element.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it sharp enough at f/1.2 to use wide open for portraits, with centre sharpness peaking between f/2 and f/11; one lab test found the Canon and Nikon 85mm f/1.2 lenses slightly sharper wide open, but hard to tell apart in real shooting. Bokeh is described as very smooth with a natural fall-off, and both axial and lateral colour fringing are minimal. Distortion is a slight pincushion, and vignetting at the widest apertures clears by f/2.8.
Autofocus is fast, quiet and decisive with eye detection, giving a high hit rate even at f/1.2. Handling and build are rated highly, especially the aperture lock and the two function buttons. The drawbacks are weight for long sessions, cat's-eye highlights toward the frame edges and the care needed with such shallow depth of field. Both reviews see it as strong value: one against the Canon and Nikon 85mm f/1.2 lenses, the other against Sony's 85mm f/1.4 GM II.
