The lens shipped in October 2026, and independent test results were not available to this research pass. Sigma's own MTF charts show very high centre contrast at f/1.2 with a gradual fall-off toward the corners, which fits a lens designed mainly for portraits, and Sigma claims strong flare and ghost resistance.

Compared with earlier AF 85mm f/1.2 designs for other mounts, which often weigh well over a kilogram, its 905g and 82mm filter size are its most concrete advantages. Its minimum focus distance of 0.84m (1:8.9) is longer than most 85mm f/1.4 lenses.

Owner feedback was still limited at the time of writing. Early interest centred on the price of $1,599, which undercuts rival f/1.2 portrait primes, and on the weight being close to some 85mm f/1.4 designs.

Likely concerns are typical of the class: an 0.84m close focus that limits tight headshots, the bulk of an 87mm-wide barrel on small bodies, and Sony's restrictions on third-party lenses, such as capped burst rates on some high-speed bodies.
