Optical character
This is Sigma's 2014 DSLR 50mm F1.4 Art, rebuilt with a native L-Mount when Sigma brought its Art primes to the mount in 2019. The optics are unchanged: 13 elements in 8 groups with three SLD elements and one aspherical element, a 9-blade rounded aperture and a 40cm minimum focus distance. Adapting the SLR design to the short mirrorless mount made it longer: the L-Mount version is 123.9mm long and weighs 905g, against 99.9mm and 815g for the SA-mount version.
Autofocus uses Sigma's HSM ring motor. There is no aperture ring and Sigma makes no dust or splash sealing claim for this lens. Sigma has since discontinued the L-Mount version.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers found it very sharp in the frame centre at f/1.4 and very good towards the edges. It peaks around f/4, and distortion and lateral colour fringing are negligible. Bokeh is generally smooth, but transitions can look busy against abrupt tonal changes, and bokeh fringing is visible at f/1.4. Vignetting wide open is noticeable on full frame, and coma in the full-frame corners could be lower.
Autofocus was quick and quiet on most bodies, with one test reporting inconsistent results on an older professional DSLR. Bright light sources in frame cause a slight loss of contrast. The main practical complaints are size and weight for a 50mm and the lack of weather sealing. Reviewers still rated it among the best 50mm f/1.4 lenses for the money.
