Optical character
The 50mm F1.4 CL is the first lens in a new CL line within Sigma's I series of compact metal primes, and it is an f/1.4 standard prime only 54mm long and 375g on L-Mount. Sigma deliberately left some aberrations in the 9-element, 6-group design (one FLD and three aspherical elements) to give a gentle softness in the focus plane, smooth bokeh and a natural sense of depth, aimed at portraits and snapshots rather than maximum resolution.
To keep it short, the whole optical unit moves to focus, driven by a new RDD (Rotary Direct Drive) actuator that arranges HLA-style coils and magnets in a ring. Turning the focus ring switches to manual focus on the fly. The all-metal barrel has an aperture ring, a distance scale with a depth-of-field scale, a knurled hood and a magnetic metal cap, plus dust and splash sealing and a water- and oil-repellent front element. It comes in black or silver; Sigma announced it in October 2026 for release in early spring 2027.
