Optical character
The 24mm F1.8 is the widest of Panasonic's matched f/1.8 primes. It shares the 67mm filter thread, size and balance point of the 35mm, 50mm and 85mm F1.8, so you can swap lenses on a gimbal or rig without rebalancing. At 310g and 82mm long it suits the smaller S bodies.
Twelve elements in 11 groups include three aspherical, one UED and three ED elements, with a nine-blade rounded aperture. A linear motor drives fast, silent autofocus, focus breathing is suppressed for video, and the lens focuses to 0.24m. Controls are minimal: a focus ring and an AF/MF switch, plus control-ring assignment added by firmware. It is dust, splash and freeze resistant.
Reviewer consensus
Reviewers agree the autofocus is the highlight: near instant at normal distances, virtually silent, and with very little focus breathing, which makes the lens a strong video choice. Optically the verdicts differ in degree. One test found it sharp across the frame from f/1.8 and outstanding from f/2.8 to f/11. A lab test found excellent centre sharpness by f/2.8 but weaker edges at wide apertures. Both saw well-controlled colour fringing, and vignetting wide open clears by about f/4.
Uncorrected barrel distortion is strong but corrected in camera. Build and weather sealing are praised, while the lack of an aperture ring or other controls, and a price close to faster Sigma 24mm options are the common reservations for stills shooters.
