Optical character
Panasonic's smallest full-frame zoom, made to match the compact LUMIX S9. It retracts to 40.9mm long and weighs 155g. The 18-40mm range runs from ultra-wide to near-normal, which suits landscapes, architecture and snapshots rather than shallow depth of field.
The eight-element design uses three aspherical, two ED and one UHR element, and a stepping motor drives a light rear focus group. It focuses to 0.15m between 18mm and 21mm (0.28x at 21mm), and Panasonic suppresses focus breathing for video. There is no optical stabilisation. Despite the size it is dust, splash and freeze resistant, with a fluorine-coated front element and 62mm filters.
