Optical character
Leica's German-made wide zoom for the SL, launched in April 2018 to complete the original trio of SL zooms. It runs from 16mm to a standard 35mm, which makes it a landscape and architecture lens that can also cover events and reportage. It is big for its speed: 990g and 123mm long at f/3.5-4.5.
The 18-element, 12-group design has two aspherical elements (four aspherical surfaces) and three elements of anomalous partial dispersion glass. A stepping motor with linear guide moves a single, very light focusing element, which keeps autofocus fast and quiet for video. Zooming and focusing are internal, the front does not rotate, filters are 82mm, close focus is 0.25m (1:3.7 at 35mm), and the metal barrel is dust and splash sealed with AquaDura coating.
Reviewer consensus
Testers found it sharp, with good detail across the frame, but measured results were good rather than outstanding: edges soften at wider apertures across the zoom range, while the centre holds up well. Distortion is low for an ultra-wide zoom, and colour fringing is hard to find in corrected files, though uncorrected raw files show more lateral chromatic aberration than usual. Vignetting is visible at maximum aperture and mostly gone by f/5.6. Bokeh is smoother than expected for a wide lens.
Autofocus is quick, near silent and fine for video and tracking, if not the snappiest. Build quality is top class, with an all-metal sealed barrel, internal zoom and a non-rotating front. The criticisms are size and weight for an f/3.5-4.5 lens, a wide rectangular hood, flare artefacts when pointing at bright lights, and a very high price, which makes it a niche lens even if its range is useful every day.
