A 1:1 macro that is just 298g and 82mm long, the same size as Panasonic's f/1.8 primes and with the same 67mm filters, which simplifies gimbal balancing when swapping lenses. Panasonic fitted it with a newly developed Dual Phase Linear Motor and a double-focus design, which let it be far smaller than other 100mm-class macros.
The 13-element design uses three aspherical, two UED and one ED elements, and the nine-blade aperture stops down to f/22. It focuses to 0.204m for full life-size reproduction, and a three-position limiter (FULL, 0.5m-infinity, 0.204-0.5m) speeds focusing. There is no optical stabilisation, so it relies on the camera's IBIS. The barrel is dust, splash and freeze resistant.
Reviewer consensus
Testers agree the size is the headline: no other full-frame 1:1 macro of this class comes close, and it balances well with the matching f/1.8 primes. Centre sharpness is very good from f/2.8, the corners are slightly soft wide open but catch up by f/4, and colour fringing is low. Autofocus is quiet and accurate.
The compromises show in lab results. Measured resolution falls short of the best macro lenses, raw files carry noticeable pincushion distortion and vignetting, performance against bright light is weak, and the bokeh shows onion-ring texture from the aspherical elements. One review saw occasional hunting at close distances. Focus breathing is large, as with most macros. Reviewers rate it as a very good buy for anyone who needs a small macro for the system, and less so for those who want the best optics.
