Optical character
One of the two zooms Leica announced with the SL system in 2015, the 90-280mm picks up where the 24-90mm leaves off and is aimed at sport, wildlife and event work. It is apochromatically corrected: seven of its 23 elements, arranged in 17 groups and seven moving groups, are made of glass with anomalous partial dispersion to suppress colour fringing across the zoom range.
Focusing uses two elements that move towards each other, driven by stepping motors in Leica's Dual Syncro Drive, and neither zooming nor focusing changes the 238mm length. Optical stabilisation is rated at 3.5 stops (CIPA, at 280mm). The metal housing is sealed against dust and splash water, and the tripod collar locks at any angle with a click stop at 90 degrees. It weighs 1710g and focuses to 0.6m at 90mm.
