Optical character
The original Summilux-SL 50 f/1.4 ASPH. was the first prime lens for Leica's SL system, released in 2016, and it was built with no concessions to size: 1,065g, 124mm long and an 82mm filter thread. Leica designed it to be the reference lens in its class, with high resolution and soft out-of-focus rendering at f/1.4 and consistent contrast throughout the focusing range.
The 11-element, 9-group design has two aspherical elements (four aspherical surfaces) and four elements of anomalous partial dispersion glass. Focusing is internal, so the length never changes, and the focus group itself includes an aspherical element. Close focus is 0.6m (1:10). The housing is sealed against dust and water splashes and the outer surfaces carry Aqua-Dura coating.
