Optical character
The 12mm f/2.8 Zero-D is a 122° rectilinear ultra-wide with very low distortion and an f/2.8 maximum aperture. It is an all-metal manual lens with no electronic contacts, a short fixed hood that protects the protruding front element, and a detachable outer hood. It began as a DSLR lens; the L-Mount version was part of Laowa's July 2020 L-Mount line-up.
It suits architecture, interiors, landscapes and night skies. Focus goes down to 0.18m (0.2x) for strong foregrounds, and the front element carries Laowa's water- and dust-repellent Frog Eye coating. The bulbous front means no screw-in filters; filters need Laowa's adaptor or a 100mm holder.
Reviewer consensus
Testers find the centre sharp from f/2.8 and the frame sharp almost to the edges once stopped down, with f/8 the best aperture. Distortion is slight, simple barrel rather than wavy, so straight lines stay straight for architecture. Chromatic aberration is low and lateral fringing is easy to remove.
Wide open, field curvature lowers corner contrast and coma shows in the corners, still visible at f/5.6, which matters for astrophotography; astigmatism wide open was also noted. Vignetting is clear at f/2.8 (about 2.3 EV) and a green corner cast appeared on one Sony body. The aperture is not recorded in EXIF and critical focus needs magnified live view. Flare is hard to provoke but not class-leading, and the 7-blade aperture gives less defined sunstars.
Owner sentiment
The few owner reports read come from DSLR and adapted-mirrorless users rather than L-Mount shooters. Several raise copy and setup issues: one owner reported back-focus on Nikon DSLR bodies and said the lens had been at the factory for months, and another found soft corners on a Sony body through a Nikon-to-E adapter that the reviewer suspected was too short.
Other readers worry about corner coma for star fields compared with a Samyang 14mm.
