Optical character

The original D-Dreamer 12mm made Laowa's name: an f/2.8 12mm with close to zero distortion, at a time when most lenses this wide bent straight lines. It is a heavy all-metal manual lens with a short built-in hood and a detachable outer hood, and after DSLR and Sony FE versions it arrived in native Nikon Z mount in December 2019.

It is aimed at architecture, interiors and night landscapes. The f/2.8 aperture is useful for stars, the 0.18m close focus allows strong foregrounds, and the dust- and water-repellent Frog Eye coating protects the bulbous front element. Filters need Laowa's 100mm holder.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers praise excellent centre sharpness from f/2.8 and good to very good corners when stopped down, along with remarkably low, non-wavy distortion for a retrofocus 12mm. Lateral colour is present but easy to correct, and flare is hard to provoke.

Wide open, the corners are softened by field curvature, and coma is noticeable until around f/5.6, which limits it for demanding astrophotography. Vignetting is moderate (about 2.3 EV wide open), and the 7-blade aperture gives softer sunstars than Laowa's later 5-blade designs.

Owner sentiment

Real-estate and architecture shooters like the straight lines, which often need no correction at all, and the solid metal build. Many owners say it is the lens that made them trust third-party ultra-wides.

Users note it is heavier than newer designs, has a long 270° focus throw, has no electronic contacts, and needs a large filter holder. The 2025 Lite version, also made for Z, has since replaced it as Laowa's lighter 12mm.
