Optical character
The 14mm F2.8 is 7Artisans' budget full-frame rectilinear ultra-wide for landscapes, interiors and night skies. Thirteen elements in nine groups include two aspherical, three ED and five high-index elements, giving a 116-degree view with very low distortion. The 10-blade diaphragm is meant for ten-point sunstars.
It is a fully manual, all-metal lens with no electronic contacts. A switch beside the aperture ring changes it between clicked and de-clicked operation for video. The front element bulges, but the detachable hood carries a 77mm thread, so standard screw-in filters work, which is unusual for a 14mm. Close focus is a fairly long 0.43m.
Reviewer consensus
Both reviews found distortion very low and colour fringing well controlled, and both flagged flare as the main weakness, with flare and halos when the sun is in the frame. A lab-style test on a 61MP body rated centre sharpness good wide open and excellent at f/5.6, but the corners poor to average at f/2.8 and never better than good, with strong vignetting until about f/8. It put overall sharpness roughly level with the long-running Samyang 14mm f/2.8 and behind 7Artisans' own 15mm f/4.
A hands-on review on a 24MP Nikon body was more positive about sharpness across the frame and found vignetting slight. Both praise the all-metal build, the click/de-click switch and the 77mm filter thread on the hood, and the Nikon review also likes the well-damped focus ring. The criticisms are the weight and length for a manual wide-angle, the long minimum focus distance that limits close-up effects, sunstars that are not well defined, and the lack of autofocus and EXIF data.
