Samyang AF 14mm F2.8 RF

Tests on the EOS R, R5 and RP agree that autofocus is quick and quiet and that the lens peaks in the centre at f/4–5.6, while the borders and especially the corners are soft wide open and need f/5.6–8 to catch up. Views on the centre at f/2.8 differ, from very good to fairly soft. Raw files show strong barrel distortion (around 3.8%) and close to 3 EV of corner shading at f/2.8, and lateral CA rises in the corners; profiles correct much of this.

The lens is prone to flare even with its fixed hood, bokeh is only mediocre, and the protruding front element rules out front filters. Build is solid metal and good value for the money, and testers saw it as an affordable alternative to Canon's much more expensive RF 15-35mm f/2.8L. Caveats include copy-to-copy variation and decentring, and uncertainty about long-term support for reverse-engineered third-party AF on the RF mount.
