Optical character

The Otus ML 1.4/50 launched the mirrorless Otus line in 2025. It is a native E, RF and Z-mount Apo Distagon with 14 elements in 11 groups, four of them anomalous-partial-dispersion glass and two aspherical. It is not the DSLR Otus 1.4/55 on an adapter. It is shorter and lighter (677g in E mount) and focuses down to 0.5m.

The lens is all metal and manual focus, with a 260-degree helicoid, a 10-blade aperture with a DeClick function, a 67mm filter thread, and a blue sealing ring at the mount plus splash seals. It is tuned for a softer, more three-dimensional rendering than the older Otus lenses, with smooth bokeh and good close-range performance.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers praise the build, the weather sealing and the focus feel, and report strong performance at close and medium distances with little field curvature or coma. Flare and ghosting are well controlled, and bokeh is called pleasant and smooth, though not class-leading.

The criticisms are a relatively soft centre at f/1.4 compared with the best modern 50mm lenses, noticeable colour fringing wide open, and pronounced focus breathing (about 11% from infinity to close focus). Several reviews question the value against excellent autofocus 50mm f/1.2 and f/1.4 lenses that cost less.

Owner sentiment

Owners talk most about the tactile experience: a heavy, smooth focus ring, precise aperture clicks and a solid metal build that held up in snow and cold. Many like the character of the images, with gentle wide-open contrast that sharpens quickly on stopping down.

The common complaints are price, the lack of autofocus at this level, weight for a 50mm, and breathing for video. Some buyers waited for the street price to drop, and the $500 discounts seen at US retailers in 2026 were welcomed.
