Optical character

Viltrox's full-frame nifty fifty is a 205g, 56.5mm-long autofocus prime that costs $199 and is sharper across the frame at f/2 than most lenses in its class. Three ED, four high-refractive and one aspherical element keep lateral colour and distortion very low, and the internal STM focusing keeps the length fixed.

It is a deliberately simple lens: a plastic barrel on a metal mount, a single focus ring, no aperture ring and no AF/MF switch. A USB-C port in the mount handles firmware updates, and it takes common 58mm filters.

Reviewer consensus

Testers found it excellent in the centre wide open and very good to the corners, with the whole frame reaching top marks around f/4. Several placed it at or near the top of the budget 50mm field, alongside or ahead of compact f/2 primes that cost more than twice as much. Distortion is close to zero and lateral CA is negligible.

The weak points are consistent. Flare resistance is poor, with veiling and ghosting when a bright source is in or near the frame, and vignetting is heavy at f/2 at around 2.5 EV. Bokeh is acceptable but can look busy against detailed backgrounds, and the STM motor is accurate and quiet but not quick enough for sport.

Owner sentiment

Owners buy it as a light everyday or travel lens and are generally surprised by how sharp it is for the money. The small size on A7C-class bodies and the quiet AF for casual video are frequent positives.

Complaints focus on the plastic feel, the lack of any weather sealing or physical controls, and flare in backlit scenes. Some note that Eye AF is reliable but slower to lock than Sony's own lenses in dim light.
