Optical character

This was the lens that made third-party zooms mainstream on Sony FE. In 2018 it offered a constant f/2.8 standard zoom at 550g and $799, roughly half the weight and price of Sony's 24-70 GM, by starting at 28mm instead of 24mm. It set the 67mm filter size that Tamron then used across its E-mount range.

The RXD stepping motor is quiet and well suited to video, and the 0.19m close focus at 28mm gives about 1:2.9 magnification. It has no buttons or switches at all, not even an AF/MF switch. Tamron replaced it with the VXD G2 version in 2021.

Reviewer consensus

Reviewers found it sharp in the centre throughout the range and well into the corners at the wide and middle settings, with the 75mm end the weakest wide open. Bokeh is smooth for a zoom, and colour fringing is modest.

The criticisms were the missing 24-27mm, strong uncorrected distortion and vignetting at 28mm, and AF that is accurate but a step behind Sony's own lenses for fast action and continuous tracking. Later tests against the G2 show the newer lens sharper at 75mm and quicker to focus.

Owner sentiment

Owners widely describe it as the best-value zoom they bought for an A7 body, praising its size, weight and image quality for the money. Many kept it after the G2 arrived because the difference is modest for general shooting.

Recurring complaints are zoom creep when pointed downwards, the lack of any switches, some flare in strong backlight, and occasional AF hunting in dim light. A few early users reported focus issues fixed by firmware.
